Margot Brown and Carolyn Breslin, the World Bank Group Directors for Knowledge Management and Talent, Leadership, and Career Development, respectively, are sponsoring acompetition to identify the top “Stories of Impact” from 2017. During the Community Managers Appreciation Day (CMAD) on January 22, 2018, we will announce the winners of this contest and recognize the people and communities that have excelled in supporting the World Bank Group’s role as a knowledge-sharing institution for sustainable development.
Earn visibility for your community of practice and your team’s good work by submitting a story of how your community members shared knowledge in a way that impacted operations. Submissions will be considered for these five categories:
Practitioner Support - did you develop a system/process to provide support to practitioners, for example a just-in-time response system, and what was the impact on your members?
Business Support - did your community provide direct support to operations, for example through a S.W.A.T. team, and what were the results
Learning - did your community focus on peer-learning, for example through online or in-person activities, and how did this improve your members' competencies and project quality?
Innovation - has your community developed new ideas and solutions to solve developmental challenges, for example through crowdsourcing, and what was the impact on the field?
Coordination - did your community facilitate knowledge sharing, connectivity, and coordination among different teams working on similar projects, and how did this improve effectiveness?
Q1: Just a quick question about the Story of Impact Competitions: Does “the story” have to take place in the year of 2017 or FY17? – Gunes Basat
From Bruce Summers: Dear Gunes, Great question. Check the criteria on the application/submission form, but I think the Story of Impact could stretch further than just the year 2017 or FY 17. Most Communities develop impact over time and are not bound to as strict calendar year or Fiscal year.
Example: the success/impact of the WBG Community Managers or the KnowledgeMatters! Or the Collab4Dev Community Managers Roundtable would need to be measured over time. Often, we need to look back to see the Impact of say the CoP Level 1 Training Program, example: has it adequately prepared a pipeline of trained CMs sufficient to fill current and emerging CoPs. What is the impact story of the Working Out Loud program – perhaps there are short term impacts, but there may be even greater long term impacts.
Emilia and Bardha may have other thoughts or insights, but to me Stories of Impact – sometime emerge over (vs. needing to be limited to) time.
Q3: I'm wondering if this (Request for Stories of Impact) is part of the CoP Lab homework?
Perhaps we are too new to be able to share "impact"...? However, I'm very open to learn from you though what you would consider a good impact story to use for this contest.
A3: Bruce: No, this not connected to the Cop Lab. It is a competition. Winners will be selected and recognized at the Jan. 22nd Community Appreciation Day Celebration (CMAD).
Read the guidelines in the submission form to get how to frame a Cop Impact Story.
I like to think-What does success look like? How to track and celebrate progress and how do you tell stories about the impact your Community has had along the way.
I think about... So where were we when we start... So what is different as a result of the CoP... So what are the results... Your Stories add "context" to more quantifiable measures.

Q4: We would like to get more information and support in preparing our submission. We would love to find out more about format, style, and length requirement of the submissions and any other information that may be important to know as we prepare our submission.
A4: Bruce - Re: your questions:
Format: Click on the Submit your Story link, you will see the various prompts for submission. I recommend you test these re: whether you can enter the story directly in the prompts or if you can cut and paste it in from a Word of PDF file. I have done some light testing and could copy and paste “Word content” in, I am not sure how well it will work for documents with more complicated formatting. I have not tested with a PDF file.
Style: We do not have a set style recommendation, there will be about 5 or 7 reviewers, several are Manager and Above colleagues. Recommend you focus on the Impact that can be attributed to the work of the Community. Often Stories can add the “local or unique context” to the quantitative results. What is the value add of your community.
Example: Situation, Task, Actions, Results (STAR) S: What was the situation (baseline) if your Community did not exist. T: what were some of the work program/key tasks/key needs of your Members that your CoP focused on, A: What member engagement actions/activities/features did your community focus on (what worked great/what did you learn from and then made iterative changes/enhancements), R: These community and member engagement efforts led to… XYZ results that we are proud of, our practitioners/clients/key stakeholders are now… (better able to…).
Note: you can also start in the reverse – The results/behavior change/impact(s) that we are proudest of are: then explain why and how your community enabled this Impact.
You can also follow the Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Based (SMART) goal format to show how your community set goals, added value and enabled impact
Length: there are no fixed guidelines – consider if you were the reviewer of 5, 10 or 25 nominated stories, how long is long enough to tell a compelling story of impact. Example: 5 pages of charts plus 10 pages of text – might be too long. Two paragraphs may be too short. Your could consider an Executive Summary length – 1 plus pages that hits the high points and makes your case for Impact fairly concisely. Good practice, have one or two reviewers read the story – is it compelling, does it describe the impact of your community on your members and the WBG's business goals.

And then there was 3 Days left to submit a Story of Impact. The good news is I have a list of at least 12 teams that are working on one or more stories. Some Communities have shared that they are just getting started and they will wait for next year's Story of Impact Competition. One Community has not yet formally launched on it's platform, but they are already getting significant results and showing impact.
Story telling is an important, perhaps the most important way to show the results and impact of the work of Collaborative Teams and Communities of Practice. I hope to be "surprised" and inspired by your story of impact.
When I worked at the American Red Cross, I saw time and time again, that a good story, often about a volunteer and how they had made a difference, or how they had helped their Red Cross chapter innovate a new way to deliver a service, or how they helped a specific family during a disaster response... how they made an impact on other's lives in time of need made more of impact (on the general public) then all the statistics... that we responded to 60,000 disasters a year and served millions of meals and sheltered 10's of thousands and collected almost half of the nation's blood supply.
Kindly take 30 to 35 minutes to share your Community's "Story of Impact". - Bruce
